Star Spanglin' It

Our pastor is involved in the local Sammamish Rotary Club. He and his wife talk often about the great projects and opportunities they participate in for the community through the Club. A couple of weekends ago, the Rotary Club hosted a Soapbox Derby for children with disabilities and our pastor asked if I would sing the National Anthem to open the day’s events. Of course I was more than happy to sing, and even more excited to attend the Derby.

The weather was absolutely perfect and the kids were so excited. They had about 10 different cars, sponsored by local businesses and organizations --- the local fire and police departments sponsored two cars that even had blinking lights on them and were decorated to look like a fire engine and police cruiser! Each child with a disability was paired with a driver and in a number of heats they raced down a long hill. The High School cheerleaders cheered for every race down the sidelines and the football players pulled the Soapboxes back up the hill -- talk about a work out! The races were so much fun and it was obvious the kids had a blast!

The local paper covered the event and stuck a photo of me singing the Anthem. However, if you’ll note their spelling error – I obviously did not SIGN the National Anthem because my mouth is WIDE OPEN! Ha……oh….local papers. Where’s my mom to proofread when you need her?
